As Chllr Merkel’s 2021 departure moves ever closer, the road to retirement is becoming increasingly turbulent.

This week saw her coalition partners elect new leadership, after 6 months of caretaker rule. In a shock result, the SPD membership selected the left-wing Norbert Walter-Borjans and Saskia Esken as joint leaders with 53% of the vote. The current Finance Minister Olaf Scholz managed only 45%.
